Rooks Climbs Away

The start list for the 1983 Liege-Bastogne-Liege included Frenchman Bernard Hinault, World Champion Giuseppe Saronni and American superstar Greg LeMond.

The race began to ramp up through the turn in Bastogne. A long strung-out peloton broke apart on the Cote de Saint-Roche. With the increased difficulty of the climbs on the return trip the Liege weaker riders were dropping off the pace.

The final selection was made on the climb of the Cote de La Redoute. The four rider group included Hinault, Saronni, American Jonathan Boyer, and Steven Rooks.

Coming into Liege the breakaway hit the final climb. Rooks jumped off the front and didn’t look back. He rode down the Boulevard de la Sauveniere to the cheers of the huge crowd. Dutchman Steven Rooks crossed the finish line for a 10 second victory.
